How to use your washi tape beginner Friendly tutorial

Washi tape is a favorite tool for crafters, because of easy and versatile use, with so many designs to explore. Even if you totally new to decorating with washi tape, or you're alreasy an expert, this guide will introduce you to some beginner-friendly techniques. Inspired by a fantastic video from The Washi Tape Shop, we'll walk you through a step-by-step process to create beautiful layouts using washi tape. Let's get started!

1. Creating a Rhombus Layout

The first layout involves creating a striking rhombus design. Here's how you can achieve this look:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Pre-draw Rhombus Shapes: Start by drawing rhombus shapes on your journal pages. These will be your guidelines.

Cover with Thin Tape:
Use thin washi tape to cover the edges of the rhombus shapes. This creates a clean and defined border.

Overlay with Florit Trilogy Washi Tape: Once the borders are in place, overlay them with a floral washi tape from the Florit Trilogy collection. This adds a beautiful decorative touch.

Trim the Excess: Tear off any excess tape and remove the overlapping parts for a neat finish.

Cut Out the Middle Space: Using a craft knife, carefully cut out the blank space in the middle of the rhombus. This creates an eye-catching cut-out effect.

Create a Gradient Effect: Use cotton to apply a gradient effect along the edges of the irregular shape. This adds depth and dimension to your design.

2. Enhancing Your Journal Pages

For the second part of the layout, we’ll add some creative elements to both the left and right sides of your journal pages.

Left Side:

  1. Cover the Edges with Flower Tape: Apply a flower-patterned washi tape along the edges of the journal page. Tear off any excess tape for a clean edge.

  2. Add a Central Character: Place a decorative character sticker or drawing in the middle of the page.

  3. Draw Horizontal Lines: If you plan to write on this page, draw some horizontal lines around the character for a structured layout.

Right Side:

  1. Frame with Thin Tape: Place another character in the center of the second page and surround it with thin washi tape to create a frame.

  2. Overlay with Flower Tape: Continue to cover the frame with another flower-patterned washi tape, adding a cohesive look to your layout.

  3. Add Text Elements: Finish by adding text elements within the frames or around the central character. This can include quotes, dates, or any notes you wish to include.

3. Filling Rhombus Frames with Washi Tape

To add a seasonal touch to your journal, use fall flowers washi tape to fill rhombus frames.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Draw Rhombus Frames: On both sides of the journal, draw rhombus frames where you want to apply the washi tape.

  2. Fill with Fall Flowers Tape: Fill these frames with fall flowers washi tape, tearing off the excess for a neat look.

  3. Apply Washi Tape Stickers: Inside the rhombus frames, place washi tape stickers for added decoration.

  4. Use Black and White Tape: To fill any remaining frames, use black and white washi tape. This adds contrast and completes the look.

  5. Add Characters and Text: Finally, include characters and text elements to personalize your layout.
